Herman Ohme Chess Set revisited
silicone molding | Jesmonite casting

The Jesmonite chess set and concrete board is a personal project which uses cutting edge technology to serve craft processes.

The main purpose of the design was to re-actualise the popular vintage minimalistic Herman Ohme design.

The wish was to use Jesmonite 730 and 100.

100 series allowing to play with pigment and the 730 allowing to use the set outdoor.

We have used Autodesk Fusion 360 to model up the parts over a picture of the vintage set.

We have then used some low-poly Mesh techniques which we have reproduced on each one.

The parts were then printed using my DLP printer in order to obtain a an accurate finish and clean surfaces.

The next step was to create some silicone moulds from the 3D printed parts.

If we initially intented to make the board in walnut which is about to be done, I also decided to give a go to some concrete pieces cast into a rather large silicone mould realised from a Ply prototype onto which I have stuck some square hard boards for the blacks cases.

Of course the general intent was to come out of the usual Black and White and bring an alternative feel via shapes and colours.
